BRYSON DRAMA
Bryson Drama??? NO WAY! Could have fooled me!
Bryson entered Open Championship week being the talk of the golf world yet again, but only because of an equipment switch.
We saw him pull the Krank driver out of the bag at the U.S. Open and replace it with a TaylorMade Qi4d proto. Then at The Open, things got a little more dramatic.
Bryson showed up Monday with a full set of new irons, new shafts, and 10 different wedges. The wedge switch-up is NOT uncommon when playing links style courses, but a complete switch up of irons and shafts was mind-boggling.
Then... shit hit the FAN.
Bryson was assessed a 2 stroke penalty on Friday of The Open in one of the most controversial calls ever to take place in golf.
Now before we go any further... I am not a Bryson hater, nor am I a Bryson lover. But from what I saw... it was a penalty.
But good ole Rory McIlroy could not help himself, taking to a presser and saying "I am not particularly fond of him (Bryson)... alot of what he does is performative". And you and I both well know this lit up the golf world.
Bryson is one of the more 'popular' professional golfers and, calling it how we see it, has done a SIGNIFICANT amount for the game. Hate him or love him, that's the truth... Now whether you believe it's good or bad is up to your discretion.
So, with Rory speaking on the situation, a ton of other pros stepped in; Xander, Sam Burns, Max Homa, etc. all saying pretty much the same thing: "I feel bad for Bryson".
Following the 2 stroke penalty on Friday, Bryson was still in a great position to compete for the Claret Jug, but he fell apart on Sunday, ultimately eliminating any chance to win the tournament.
Through all the drama of the week and the issues Bryson faced, the clubs worked well, and we actually got to see him make the cut and play some solid golf.
Major Winners
Rory McIlroy, Aaron Rai, Wyndham Clark, Ryan Fox.
What a lineup... One that absolutely no golf fan prior to the season could have ever in a MILLION years guessed.
But of course, there are some fans out there extremely upset that there were not more 'powerhouse' names hoisting major championship trophies.
Why?
Well I do not have a great answer for you... in my humble but generally accurate opinion its because golf fans just want to be mad about nothing?
Rory repeats at the masters, Aaron Rai wins the PGA his first ever Major Champ, Wyndham Clark secures his 2nd U.S. Open, and 39 year old Ryan Fox wins his first major at The Open... how is that NOT electric?
And if you watched all FOUR days of each of these tournaments, the leaderboards were incredibly fun & the golf was top notch, so being upset that we had 2 new Major Champions, and 2 repeat winners is LAME.
What is Next???
Contrary to popular belief, even though Majors are over, we still have a few more SOLID events left on the schedule.
Some of them will have great fields, others will not...
3M Open THIS weekend, Rocket Classic July 30-Aug 2, Wyndham Championship Aug 6-Aug 9, FedEx St. Jude Championshiop Aug 13-Aug 16, BMW Aug 20-Aug 23, and finally wrapping up the 2026 Season with the 40 Million Dollar Purse; TOUR Championship at East Lake.
So yes, Majors are over but the season is not quite finished.
Final Thoughts
Golf is SUPER soft right now... We are seeing a rivalry continue to unfold in Rory/Bryson... and rivalries are what make sports SO incredible. Let’s look at football: Auburn v. Alabama, Cowboys v. Eagles (even though the Cowboys stink), and Ohio State v. Michigan. It is 100000% possible for golf to have an edge and stay respectful. Let’s ALL take a deep breath!
